With Italian tools in hand, American artist Susan Snyder draws on her experiences and master training in both Faenza, Italy and at home in Bloomington, Indiana to create original maiolica pottery. She remains dedicated to Italian methods and colors creating hand-painted one-of-a kind pieces, finding inspiration in elaborate floral, fruit, celestial, animal, and geometric designs from 13-18th century Italy. At the same time, she stays true to herself, creating original pottery with both contemporary and traditional themes. Her lead-free, food-safe, and dishwasher-friendly pieces align with modern needs and are destined to become family heirlooms.
Recognized for its high quality and charm, Susan’s work has been featured on the HGTV show “That’s Clever” and in the books 500 Plates and Platters and The Best of 500 Ceramics: Celebrating a Decade in Clay by Lark Crafts. She was one of only three international maiolica artists to be featured in the Russian magazine Home.
Susan showcases her authenticity by creating whimsical pottery with lighthearted themes. Originality is key to Susan's work. She can make reproductions of traditional ware patterns but she can also create new ideas based on traditional techniques.
